Meisterwerke der Renaissance und des Barock

The gallery building designed by Gottfried Semper at the Dresden Zwinger is not only home to the Old Masters Picture Gallery but also to the Sculpture Collection before 1800, which is rightly praised for the quality and first-class provenance of its pieces. In addition to outstanding works from antiquity, around 100 sculptures from the Renaissance and Baroque periods can now be seen in the Semper Building. This new concept for the gallery was preceded by an intensive examination of the collection, which also uncovered previously unknown treasures. Initial findings are presented in this volume, which aims to convey an impression of the beauty and diversity of the Dresden Sculpture Collection through its selection of masterpieces by Filarete, Giambologna, Adriaen de Vries, Gianfrancesco Susini, Corneille Van Clève, and Guillaume Coustou, as well as Paul Heermann and Balthasar Permoser.
