Matthias Brandis tells the life story of two Hamburg Jewish families over 200 years. Yoel Wolf (later Immanuel Wohlwill) received a liberal education as a child at the progressive Jacobson School in Seesen - a basic attitude that he also passed on to his own five children and that continued in the next generations. This led to an acculturation of all Family members with a wide variety of professions and positions in education, science, business and culture. From 1933 onwards, the family structures were torn apart and the majority fled to different countries around the world. Few managed to survive in Germany. Five members were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp. Only one survived this camp and died in 1948 as a result of her imprisonment.
