She is a writer, in her mid-forties, a single mother of two children, and although her attempts at relationships usually fail, life feels very comfortable: Barcelona, the summer by the sea, the bodies, the bars, a spirited ease. Until a ghost assaults her, a sudden memory: of Gema, the very best childhood friend, who was fifteen when she became irrecoverably ill with cancer. What would have become of her? When did she and Gema last see each other? And why has the memory of the lost friend faded so much?
