Mein Spitzbergen

For 16 years, Birgit Lutz has been traveling to Spitsbergen. As an expedition leader, she introduces visitors to the island's history, extreme landscapes, and diverse wildlife, involving her guests in a research project she initiated. As a person, she is repeatedly enchanted: by the bluish light that illuminates the ice at the beginning of the polar summer, by laughing crab divers and exuberant sled dogs, and by encounters with the international community in Longyearbyen, where one rarely goes outside without a gun due to the ever-present polar bears, yet leaves doors and cars unlocked.
