Mein Name ist Fridolin

Since the 6th century, Fridolin has been a significant figure. The Glarner coat of arms is the only cantonal coat of arms in Switzerland featuring a human figure, "Sant Fridli." According to the "Ursus stood uuf" legend, Glarus inherited the possessions of the Säckingen monastery, which was founded by Fridolin. His flag flew over the heads of the battle at Näfels in 1388. Even after the redemption of feudal obligations to the Säckingen monastery, Fridolin remained a central figure in Glarnerland. Countless boys were baptized with the name Fridolin. The "Fridlistag" was a public holiday until 1973, although after the Reformation it was only celebrated by Catholics. Therefore, in 1973, the Landsgemeinde replaced it with All Saints' Day. Nevertheless, Fridolin remained ever-present as a patron saint, on license plates, as names for taverns and garages, in free newspapers, on Fridliweggen and -wurst, as a lapel pin, on ties, or souvenirs. Photographer Sasi Subramaniam created a "Fridolin" photo book. The texts were written by Fridolin Hauser (Fridli Osterhazy), the president of the Fridlibund of the Canton of Glarus.
