The Brazilian-French star photographer Sebastião Salgado is celebrated worldwide for his compelling photo reports, exclusively in black and white. His social documentary images, for which he has traveled around the globe for decades, hold up a mirror to us and simultaneously show the world as a creation of overwhelming beauty. Salgado sharpens our awareness of its preciousness: his images testify to the dignity of humanity as well as to the majesty and vulnerability of our planet. As an artist and activist, he fights for environmental and species protection with his camera. In October 2019, Salgado was awarded the Peace Prize of the German Book Trade. Sebastião Salgado, now one of the most famous photographers in the world, grew up on a Brazilian farm in the 1950s. After studying in São Paulo and Paris, he had a career as an economist ahead of him – but chose to pursue art instead. In "My Country, Our Earth," the photographer tells the stories behind his most famous reports.
