The media law appears in its 4th edition and once again as a complete revision with a changed systematics. The subject of media law is fascinating and is in constant flux due to ongoing digitalization and social media. The media itself are constant companions in the transformation of our living environment. New legislative efforts, international agreements and standards, as well as court decisions (both national and foreign, especially on new topics such as the internet or digitalization) demand attention, engagement, and collaboration in the flow of developments. It is impossible to overlook how the printed press is suffering, yet it still seems unsure of what it wants or can want.
After a preface and a rather broad introduction (for readers in a hurry), the focus will first be on international developments. The discussion then turns to classical media law. The focus here is on the traditional press, its great freedom, but also on personality protection. This is followed by an examination of the new electronic media (telecommunications and broadcasting law). Media law is increasingly becoming a cross-sectional analysis; the relevant connections are subsequently highlighted (UWG, KG, DSG, URG, labor law, etc.). The work is illustrated with artworks from the PressArt collection of Annette and Peter Nobel – as inspiration for a deeper engagement with the subject. Ben Vautier said: Do not throw away this newspaper; its entire content is art.
