The present volume is based on a series of lectures given by the physiologist Adolf Fick at that time in Würzburg. In these lectures, he approaches the study of the properties of muscle tissue in a monographic manner. His particular focus is on the question of how muscles perform mechanical work and what thermal phenomena are associated with this work output.
