Product details
A porcelain factory in ruins. A brother lost in the war. A family dynasty during the reconstruction era. Selb, the home of white gold, 1947: When the family patriarch Ludwig Thalmeyer unexpectedly passes away, Marie, as the eldest daughter, must take over the storied porcelain factory. She struggles to learn the business but is hardly taken seriously as a young lady. She receives support from her younger, wild sister Sophie. Both secretly hope that their brother Joachim, who went missing in Russia, will return home, even though he had long turned his back on the company as a pianist before the war. Germany is in the midst of reconstruction, and many people, in their desperation, seek their fortune on the black market to survive – a challenging situation for the porcelain factory, which repeatedly faces issues sourcing kaolin. To resolve this, Marie must collaborate with the powerful paper manufacturer Karl Metsch, who abuses his power. Ironically, he soon becomes the new mayor and does everything in his power to ruin the porcelain factory – forcing Marie into a risky decision. Amidst reconstruction, a thriving black market, and countless secrets, two young women seek the path to success – and to their love, as Marie's choice falls on the deputy US military governor John McNarney. However, he must soon return to his homeland. The beginning of the grand Thalmeyer trilogy – a detailed insight into the post-war years and the story of an entire generation. Dramatic, emotional, inspiring: A journey into a time as fragile as porcelain itself.
