Product details

Max Bill (1908-1994), a key figure of European modernism, was a universal talent: a consummate painter, sculptor, architect, designer, graphic artist, and typographer; an eminent theorist, teacher, and curator; and a prolific publicist. From Switzerland and Germany, he built a worldwide network of artists and protagonists of modernism. He was committed to various design-related, as well as social and political issues, and promoted international dialogue. This multifaceted exchange, bridging ideas, people, and continents, was central to Bill's work. This monograph, published on the occasion of a major exhibition at the Paul Klee Center in Bern, focuses for the first time on Max Bill's extensive network. In addition to around eighty functional objects, graphic products, and artworks designed by Bill, works by fellow artists are also included. The thematic essays shed new light on his work and illustrate his relationships with artists in Dessau, Paris, Zurich, São Paulo, Buenos Aires, and New York.
