Inspector Studer investigates in the asylum: After the harvest festival at the Randlingen healing and care institution, both the institution's director Ulrich Borstli and the child murderer Peter Pieterlen have seemingly vanished without a trace. The progressive psychiatrist Dr. Ernst Laduner hires Inspector Studer to investigate their disappearance. Soon, Studer delves deeper into the realm of the unconscious, where the spirit of madness reigns: Matto. When the crime novel was published in 1937, it caused a stir in the healthcare system of Bern. Too many individuals recognized themselves in the story. Glauser had processed his experiences in the mental institutions of Münsingen and Waldau in this work. "There is too much lived experience in the story that only I could have experienced," he wrote to Martha Ringier in 1936 about his novel. Friedrich Glauser (1896-1938) made a name for himself with his Studer crime novels.
