Product details

While discussions about the limits of growth are prevalent everywhere, money is increasingly detaching itself from matter; it disappears from our sensory experience, seems to expand more powerfully behind our backs, and further develops its sinister logic without restraint. Just before the process of its dematerialization is complete, Aldo Haesler, Frank Engster, and Oliver Schlaudt seize perhaps the last opportunity to reveal the logic of money. Their guiding question is: What are we actually engaging with when we take money in hand? Money, it is said, makes trade and exchange more fluid, allows us to pay off our debts, measure value, and make rational decisions by quantifying costs and benefits. But at what cost? What does it demand for its services? We believe we know what we use money for – but what does money use us for? When we indulge in the illusion that we can use money for our purposes for free, it has long imposed its economy, its world, and its reasoning upon us. It is known that money is by no means economically neutral; rather, it fundamentally changes the economy, for instance, through the emergence of a financial industry. The small philosophy of money at the moment of its disappearance shows that it is also not metaphysically neutral.
