Mathilda loves her village Dettebüll in North Frisia, its residents, and her family. Well, except for Ilse, her mother, perhaps. Ilse is - unlike Mathilda - a creature of malice and wickedness. Change is anathema to Mathilda, and for forty years she has fought for harmony in the family. But then Mathilda, along with all of Dettebüll, gets caught up in a whirlwind of events that thoroughly disrupt the peace in her village: Dubious men in dark suits suddenly take an interest in the endless meadows of Dettebüll. Unrest spreads among the villagers. And before Mathilda can make sense of it all, there is the first death: Ilse dies in a tragic accident (involving frozen food). And she will not be the only one to die.
