Elementary school mathematics for team players. In the early school years, exchange, collaborative problem-solving, and decision-making are crucial for learning mathematics. This can be effectively implemented through playful approaches where goals are achieved cooperatively within a group. Why, then, do existing games and learning environments for basic mathematical skills rely on competition or offer little substantial mathematical challenges? This material volume contains over 30 tested learning environments focused on number spaces, operations, measurements, and geometry. The learning environments for grades 1 to 3 are designed so that goals can only be achieved together, allowing children to experience themselves as team players. The mathematical challenges arise situationally: through the children's decisions, by chance (e.g., drawing number cards), or by weighing different options. Learners in grades 1 to 3 work not in isolation but consistently cooperatively, exploring central mathematical concepts playfully in learning groups, searching for solutions and paths together, making individual and collective decisions, developing strategies, and discovering mathematical structures while automating basic skills. The practical suggestions for cooperative mathematics learning can be implemented with minimal material requirements.
