Product details
Martin Luther not only shaped Reformation theology but also the German language. However, the original texts of Luther, written in their powerful, rhetorically compelling early New High German, are now difficult to access. As a result, not only are linguistic peculiarities at risk of being forgotten, but the style of Luther's theology is also flattened in the necessary translations into modern language. This edition, which begins with this volume and is planned to consist of three volumes, aims to remedy this dual deficiency by presenting the early New High German originals in readable Antiqua type alongside text versions in contemporary German. The original texts follow the first prints, and concordances with the major critical Weimar edition allow for easy location of the texts in this reference edition, ensuring that discussions in the academic literature can be followed and continued using the German-German study edition. The translations have been carried out by renowned scholars from various theological disciplines. The first volume contains seventeen writings from the years 1518 to 1539 that vary the core theme of Reformation theology, namely the relationship between faith, doctrine, and life. This includes, among others, the sermons on indulgence and repentance, the treatise "On the Freedom of a Christian," the interpretation of the Magnificat, and the Small Catechism.
