Product details
Marlene Dietrich is the most famous child Berlin has ever produced. Countless books have been written about the world star. Even during her lifetime, she became a legend. One might think that everything has already been said and written about 'the Dietrich' - but that would be a mistake: especially her years in Berlin have never been thoroughly examined. Many stories and legends were spread by her own hand. Some have taken until today to be researched or rediscovered. The reader will learn many exciting and new things. For example, this book reveals the actual cause of her father's death and his partnership in a well-known Berlin watch shop. It provides insights into her marriage contract from 1925 as well as the passions of her childhood and youth. For the first time, this book also discusses her first Berlin manager, whom Marlene later saved from the Nazis. Her two visits to Berlin in 1945 are explored in detail: from her appearance at the AFN studio to the circumstances surrounding her mother's funeral. Very few people know that Marlene was in Berlin for recording sessions in July 1960. After that, the diva never saw Berlin again during her lifetime. The desire was certainly there: for years, she negotiated with the cultural officials of East Berlin. The book outlines previously unpublished details. The already known facts are presented in more detail and in new contexts in a Berlin biography of Dietrich. Her life is narrated through authentic locations in her hometown. The often still-existing bars, cafés, theaters, streets, and squares where Marlene Dietrich's life unfolded can be rediscovered and experienced on-site by readers or walkers.
