Marius Reiser

P. Athanasius, Maximilian Miller OSB (1881-1963) was one of the most renowned exegetes of the Archabbey of Beuron. Born in Wolfartsweiler, district of Saulgau, he entered the Archabbey of Beuron in 1901. He studied philosophy in Maria Laach and theology at the Sant'Anselmo University in Rome. In 1907, further biblical studies took him to Strasbourg, Jerusalem, and the Near East. In 1922, Abbot Primas Fidelis von Stotzingen appointed him to the chair of Old Testament studies at Sant'Anselmo University, a position he held until 1949. In 1940, he became a consultant, and in 1949, Pope Pius XII appointed him as the secretary of the Pontifical Biblical Commission. Due to progressive blindness, he requested to be relieved of this duty from Pope John XXIII in 1962 and returned to Beuron. He passed away on April 17, 1963, in Leutkirch. His bibliography includes 80 titles. He became particularly well-known for his Psalms translation, first published in 1920, which went through 15 editions.
