On 20 July 1960, 49-year-old Maria Theresia Wilhelm went from Grabs in the St. Gallen Rhine Valley to Buchs to buy a pair of shoes. Since that day, she has disappeared without a trace. Maria Theresia Wilhelm came from Austria and had married a Swiss gamekeeper, but this did not suit some people. For decades, Mrs Wilhelm, her husband Ulrich Gantenbein and their children were persecuted and harassed by the authorities and psychiatrists because they did not fit in with the crazy normality of a village at the foot of the Alps.
A piece of psychiatric history and a gripping tale of the irrepressible longing for freedom that is to be conquered with lidded baths, electric shocks, brain surgery and psychotropic drugs.
