Product details

Quintilian referred to Varro in his book on rhetoric as the 'most learned of all Romans.' Marcus Terentius Varro (116 BC to 27 BC) was the most significant Roman polymath of all time. No other Roman matched his productivity; he authored over 70 works on rhetoric, theology, agriculture, and philosophy. Varro had a profound influence on the culture of the Augustan age. Even in late antiquity and during the time of the Church Fathers, Varro remained an important authority and, due to his vast body of work, an inexhaustible source of cultural-historical insights. Of his countless works, only a few have survived in their entirety. His major work 'De Lingua Latina,' one of the most important books on the Latin language, has survived in parts and is now being published for the first time in German translation and commentary in a bilingual edition.
