Study paper from 2014 in the field of Art - Fine Arts in general, Style Studies, Grade: 1.7, AMD Akademie Mode & Design GmbH, Language: German.

Abstract: Phenomena in art, whether they are independent art styles or merely movements, can be seen as an engagement with what has come before, with personal emotions and experiences. They can express what occupies the artist's innermost thoughts. The focus of this paper will be to illustrate the style of Mannerism or manneristic tendencies in the art of the Renaissance as well as in art after 1945. The aim is to historically demonstrate how crises affect the visual arts of the respective time and to what extent a connection to the Mannerism of the Renaissance can be established.

This paper is based on the thesis that manneristic expressions, as an expression of crisis, represent a constant in European art culture and are not merely a phenomenon of the Renaissance. The first chapter will take a closer look at Mannerism as an art style of the Renaissance around 1520-1600. Following an attempt to investigate the origins and development history of Mannerism, the paper will illustrate Mannerism using Michelangelo's Last Judgment as an example.

In the second chapter, manneristic expressions in 20th-century art will be examined, specifically in the art after 1945 using the example of documenta 2. After an introduction to the exhibition, the investigation of manneristic tendencies in the abstract art of the post-war period will follow, along with their significance in the historical context of World War II and the Holocaust. The concluding remarks will highlight the connection between the stylistic appearance of the Renaissance and the abstract art of the 20th century, emphasizing the importance of Mannerism as a means of expressing crises.
