Malka Mai

1943: The Jewish doctor Hanna Mai lives with her daughters Minna and Malka on the Polish-Hungarian border. When the Germans begin deportations here as well, the three must flee in haste. They plan to walk over the Carpathians, but Malka falls ill and can go no further. With a heavy heart, Hanna decides to leave the child with farmers who promise to bring the girl to her once she has recovered. But everything takes a different turn: Malka is discovered and taken to a ghetto. There, the little girl develops unexpected strengths that help her endure hunger, cold, illness, and loneliness—until her mother eventually returns under great danger to rescue her.
