Maimun

The girl Tuha lives in Cairo. Since she can remember, a tame monkey has been part of the family. She named him Maimun, which means "blessed with luck." Even in ancient Egypt, the baboon was revered as a sacred animal, and to this day, it is quite common in Egypt for a monkey to be part of a household. Tuha and Maimun are indeed an inseparable pair. Tuha's father earns his living as a street performer, and every morning, Tuha and Maimun get to go for a walk through the streets of Cairo. The trio often stops, with Tuha playing the tambourine while her father sings, and Maimun dances in time. The onlookers stop and applaud, some even toss them a coin. However, despite the applause, the money that ends up in her father's pocket at the end of the day is barely enough to feed the family. Tuha sees the worry lines on his forehead in the evening... Surely he doesn't want to give Maimun away? Soon after, her father comes home with a donkey, harnesses it to a cart, and sets off to buy vegetables and fruits to sell at the market. He sees no other way out. The bright oranges on the cart inspire Tuha with an idea... Thanks to Tuha's persistence and Maimun's skill, they are soon back on the streets of Cairo. Now as a quartet, because the donkey is also along. No one has ever seen such a performance before.
