After the two major destructions in 1631 and 1945, the city was rebuilt. Magdeburg continued to grow, also through incorporations. Churches, town halls, water towers, industrial buildings, historical structures, and a variety of shops, as well as functional and residential buildings, shape the cityscape. Entire neighborhoods emerged during the founding period. Much has been extensively renovated since the 1990s. In the 1920s, Magdeburg became a city of new construction and set new standards. City architect Bruno Taut is considered one of the pioneers of modernism.
