Who and what is the 'writing man'? In today's historical landscape, 'writing women' almost constitute their own genre of popular science anthologies. Male writing, which likely shaped notions of masculinity more than any other cultural practice, rarely receives historiographical attention. This observation serves as the starting point for the volume's reflection on historiographical perspective: Where and how did men write about themselves and about the self in the other? The volume explores, through a series of essayistic contributions, self-testimonies from men and auto-/biographical writing in relation to gender.
