The stereotype that men grieve differently than women persists stubbornly. Male grief is often associated with action, functioning, repression, or emotional hardness. Such attributions lead to a one-sided and thus limiting view of grieving men. Men – but also women – are thereby stereotypically fixed on certain behaviors, rather than being encouraged in their individual ways of grieving and aligning with their own concept of masculinity. It is easy to lose sight of why people grieve the way they do. Norbert Mucksch and Traugott Roser challenge these clichés by examining grieving men from very different perspectives.
