Product details

Lina, the 'girl with three names', comes to Berlin from the provinces, works - 'because Lina is too ordinary' - as Evelyn in a dance bar, is picked up and put into a welfare home as Annunciata. She manages to escape, but experiences new misfortunes until she finally finds her way in political engagement. In this 'little novel' from 1932, Maria Leitner describes a woman's fate in the Weimar Republic, as we also encounter it in her reportages that revolve around § 218 or around the most diverse 'women in the storm of time'.As a reporter, Leitner is on a 'voyage of discovery' in Schleswig-Holstein, experiences 'St. Pauli in crisis' and in 1932 fathoms Hitler's success in a village in Mecklenburg. She visits the 'opera stage of the undiscovered', learns about the 'sexual plight of big city children', listens to the everyday life of a department store maid and experiences a 'bank clerk facing downsizing'.In all these texts originally written for newspapers and magazines, most of which are being published in book form for the first time, Leitner gives us deep insights into German life shortly before 1933.
