In 1919, Italy resembled a political wasteland. The First World War had significantly weakened the Italian government, and both socialist and right-wing nationalist groups were experiencing an unprecedented rise, radically questioning political institutions, while frustrated war veterans roamed the streets of the country. Driven by their discontent, the former fighters soon rallied around a man who called them to unite against the political left: Benito Mussolini, founder of Il Popolo d'Italia and former leader of the far-left wing of Italy's socialist party. The thirty-five-year-old managed to make his voice heard in times of political uncertainty and gathered various groups under a common banner. By the famous March on Rome in 1922 and beyond, Mussolini would rapidly expand his power in Italy and irrevocably establish fascism as the state ideology.
