"Luxembourg was never a colonial power," declared the then Luxembourgish Foreign Minister Eugène Schaus in Parliament in 1960. In fact, the small landlocked country has never had its own colonies. However, behind this facade, the Grand Duchy was deeply involved in the colonial projects of its European neighbors. Luxembourgers engaged in trade, missionary work, travel, and research in the colonies. At the state level, Luxembourg was not outside of European colonialism but was part of the colonial world through active support and collaboration. This book is the first general introduction of its kind that specifically focuses on Luxembourg. It explores the possibility, content, and consequences of a Luxembourgish colonial history.
