Product details
Ludwigshafen am Rhein looks back on a still young history. Founded in 1853, the city experienced a rapid upswing with the settlement of BASF and became the world's largest chemical site. Despite the severe destruction during the Second World War, the people of Ludwigshafen managed to transform their city into a pulsating metropolis worth living in within 30 years. Dr. Klaus J. Becker, Deputy Director of the Ludwigshafen City Archives, and Bernhard Kukatzki, renowned author of local history illustrated books, have compiled over 200 previously unpublished photographs for this book, ranging from the end of the war in 1945 to the oil crisis in the mid 1970s. Mainly from the holdings of the city archives, these show the difficult new beginning after the war under American and French occupation as well as the economic miracle with its profound changes.
