Product details

Ludwig Feuerbach's Das Wesen des Christentums, first published in 1841, is not only considered a classic of religious criticism, but also of Young Hegelian criticism. The commentary presented here covers all sections of the text of the book as well as the contexts of the history of its creation and impact. It was written by 13 researchers in the fields of philosophy and theology from Germany, Italy, Portugal, Austria and the USA. It becomes clear that Feuerbach had less of a critique of religion in mind than a critique of theology, and that in doing so he drew largely on Hegel's philosophy of religion.

This is a comprehensive biography and the first complete commentary on Feuerbach's fundamental work, including the contemporary contexts as well as the history of its creation and impact. Feuerbach's relationship to religion and to Hegel is presented in a differentiated way, whereby the continuity with classical German philosophy becomes visible. The title is thus particularly aimed at teachers and students of philosophy, theology and religious studies.
