Lucas Cranach der Ältere und Hans Kemmer

Hans Kemmer (circa 1495/1500-1561) is regarded as an inventive painter of the Reformation in Lübeck. He was well-connected and received significant commissions. On the occasion of the 460th anniversary of his death, this volume focuses on this painter's personality in dialogue with selected works of his teacher Lucas Cranach the Elder, from whom he received important impulses. With the changing commission landscape during the Reformation, Lucas Cranach the Elder and his student Hans Kemmer invented entirely new themes in painting. After his apprenticeship in Wittenberg, Kemmer returned to his hometown of Lübeck and became the most important painter there. The book illuminates the relationship between the two artists, presents the new themes in painting, addresses the historical context, and showcases new findings. Thus, the exciting changes on the path from the Middle Ages to the early modern period are at the forefront.
