Product details

The architecture of modernism in California was significantly influenced by two native Austrians: Richard Neutra and Rudolph M. Schindler combined modern forms, constructions, and materials with a vision of new living. The book presents well-known and lesser-known houses by both pioneers as well as those influenced by them from the 1930s to the 1960s. The buildings are characterized by maximum spatial economy and quality, design reduction, and a clever response to climatic conditions. Thus, they can be read not only as significant historical documents but also as models for contemporary architecture. David Schreyers' photographs depict the residences as aesthetically high-quality functional objects that are meant to undergo and embrace change. The texts by Andreas Nierhaus are based on conversations held with the residents, describing their relationship with the respective buildings. Together, the images and texts provide intimate insights into a highly developed building and living culture that remains largely underappreciated in Europe.
