Approaching the city by water reveals its unmistakable dreamlike visage to the traveler, a sight once seen that can never be forgotten. However, no matter how one arrives in Lisbon—by water, land, or air—once the visitor's foot touches the characteristic white limestone pavement and the eye is enchanted by the artistic tiles adorning the facades of the houses, the luminous city among Europe's metropolises inevitably captivates. Of course, Lisbon also has its darker sides: old houses often appear romantic to the observer, but for the resident, they hold far less charm. Nevertheless, for true Lisboetas, there is nothing outside of Lisbon that holds any significance. The city is their world in itself; for them, there is no competition: "Seven hills?
