Initially, she was just a rather insignificant princess from Heidelberg, but for political reasons, Liselotte of the Palatinate had to marry the brother of the Sun King, Louis XIV. Through her extensive correspondence with her German relatives, she became an important chronicler of life at the French royal court. Unusually free and humorous, she reports on the culture shock she experienced upon her arrival, as well as various strange customs of court society. However, Liselotte also provides insight into the darker sides, recounting conflicts and intrigues, and even revealing details about the difficult coexistence with her homosexual husband.
