Product details

In 1922, Swiss textile artist Lise Gujer (1893–1967) discovered an old loom in a house she rented in Davos and began to gain experience in weaving tablecloths. In the same year, she met Ernst Ludwig Kirchner (1880–1938) and made her first attempts to create tapestry based on his designs. This led to a close collaboration between the two. Gujer proved to be the ideal creative partner for the painter, who took up Kirchner's intentions in a congenial manner and continued to develop them independently in the years following his death. In the early 1950s, interest in her weavings based on Kirchner's designs was revived. She began to resume production using the original templates that remained with her. This more than ten-year activity was crowned with great success and a growing demand for her weavings. This first monograph on Lise Gujer comprehensively presents her life and work. In addition to various versions of individual weavings, the book also showcases the unique preparatory works that provide a nuanced view of her collaboration with Kirchner. Illustrations of numerous documents and artworks illuminate the artistic spirit that shaped her work.
