L'Ingénu est un jeune indien canadien fraîchement débarqué sur les côtes bretonnes, qui découvre la société française ave candeur. Adopted by the abbot of Kerbabon, he converted to Catholicism before becoming a bitter admirer of Mademoiselle de Saint-Yves, whom he wanted to marry despite the prohibitions of his religion. Embastillé for his opinions in favour of the Protestants, l'Ingénu is educated in prison by Gordon and constructs a critical mind. The efforts that his friend is about to deploy in order to free him are disastrous and will never lead to their destiny...

What does this analysis of the work contain?

After detailing Voltaire's biography, Delphine Fayard transports us directly into the history of L'Ingénu, which she summarises chapter by chapter. Elle se penuite sur le contexte qui vu vu naître ce conte philosophique, le règne de Louis XV, marqué par des luttes politiques, économiques et territoriales entre la France et l'Angleterre ainsi que des conflits religieux. The characters in the novel, such as l'Ingénu, Mademoiselle de Saint-Yves and Les Kerbabon, are then subjected to a rigorous analysis. This is followed by an analysis of the main themes of the work: education, the ethnocentrism of society, politics and the anti-clericalism inherent in the work. The analysis of Voltaire's style is the subject of the following chapter, while the study of the reception of this classic work concludes the literary analysis.
