The songs and choruses for the Oberufer Christmas plays were created during the composer’s time in Berlin. In 1909, he became a member of the Theosophical Society and soon contributed his musical talents to the Berlin branch. There, he led the lodge choir and was asked to compose music for various occasions. As a result, works such as those for the performances of the Christmas plays emerged, often arising from spontaneous situations and quickly written down. At that time, it was not foreseeable that the Christmas play music would endure for decades—now spanning a century. Due to their skillful craftsmanship, the songs and choruses of the Christmas plays possess a kind of timelessness that is sure to endure in the future as well.
