Combray

Marcel Proust's novel "In Search of Lost Time" is undoubtedly one of the great literary events of the 20th century. Almost fifty years after the first complete German edition, a new translation of "Combray," the overture to Proust's recherche, is now available for the first time. The ailing narrator, who recalls his childhood during sleepless nights, the taste of the madeleine dipped in tea, the scent of the hawthorn hedges, the church towers of Martinville... all these scenes from "Combray" have irrevocably entered the history of world literature. Michael Kleeberg's new translation aims to capture for the first time the full versatility and richness of allusions in Marcel Proust's language. The stylistic peculiarities of the work are also represented more accurately than ever before.
