In spring 1992, as the Serbian army begins the blockade of Sarajevo, literature student Teodor Cerić manages to escape from his hometown. He travels aimlessly across Europe, earning a living through odd jobs. He finds work as a gardener's assistant on an estate in Surrey, England, where a charming hermit once lived, who had to appear at certain times of the day to delight the park's guests with his presence. Near Paris, he visits the garden of Samuel Beckett, which could have come from Godot: simple, austere, sad, selflessly defended against every single mole. In Rome, he discovers a lonely park called Monte Caprino, where Romans once threw traitors to their deaths, and which only reveals its magic at night. Many gardens arise from a longing for a way of life that has slipped away from us but still feels familiar. At the same time, they express a profound humanism, as every gardener knows that their work never belongs to them alone. Marco Martella has compiled Teodor Cerić's travel accounts into a single volume, creating an ode to life – which truly begins on the day one plants a garden.
