In the late summer of 1795, the young general Napoleon meets the six years older widow Joséphine de Beauharnais. He falls passionately in love with the headstrong and charming person and makes her his wife one year later. Turbulent years follow, during which the two become not only the most famous lovers, but also the most powerful ruling couple in Europe. Although Napoleon finally forces a divorce in 1809 in order to remarry and produce the longed-for heir to the throne, the relationship between the two does not break off. Napoleon continued to write letters to Joséphine until her death in 1814. The present volume contains 228 letters from Napoleon from the years 1796 to 1813, which not only describe his love and friendship with Joséphine, but also provide the reader with a fascinating insight into the private life of a woman.
