Product details

The fragmentary narrative 'Lenz' (1839), published only after Georg Büchner's death, is considered one of the masterpieces of German prose. In his only story, Büchner depicts the progressive mental illness of the Sturm und Drang author Jakob Michael Reinhold Lenz (1751-1792) during his brief stay with the pastor Johann Friedrich Oberlin in January/February 1778. The innovative narrative techniques allow the reader to experience Lenz's illness firsthand – the boundaries between the inner and outer worlds, between reason and madness, seem to blur.

'Der Hessische Landbote' from 1834 marks the peak of revolutionary journalism in the German Vormärz. The socially revolutionary pamphlet, co-authored by Friedrich Ludwig Weidig and Georg Büchner, presents the economic conditions as the fundamental cause of political unfreedom and calls for resistance against the prevailing circumstances with unusual radicalism.
