Determined to the end, seventy-year-old Ticinese farmer Rocco Canonica waits in the kitchen of his mountain farmhouse for the municipal workers. They will arrive at seven o'clock to carry out the court order: the large old walnut tree in front of the house—Rocco's lifeline—is to be cut down because it obstructs the view of the lake for a wealthy newcomer who owns a villa. As Rocco cleans his rifle, he reflects on the stages of his life: the hard work on the small farm of his childhood, the forest fire that claimed his parents, the years with his wife Teresa, the departure of his two sons, and the devastating changes in the valley that destroyed the old structures.
