While 'easy' and 'simple language' have increasingly established themselves in practice, empirical research is still in its early stages. This study book sheds light on the current state of research and empirical research approaches from the perspective of various linguistic sub-disciplines. In addition to psycho- and text-linguistic fundamentals, it also addresses corpus linguistic as well as discourse and sociolinguistic approaches. Thus, for the first time, a multi-perspective, empirically based overview of research findings and approaches to this new field, which is currently being established in various linguistic disciplines, is created. The book provides an empirically grounded introduction to findings on linguistic simplicity at the word, sentence, and text levels, as well as research results on reading and understanding among the main target groups of 'easy' and 'simple language'. It also introduces empirical research methods using practical examples, taking into account both quantitative and qualitative research approaches.
