Leibhaftige Frömmigkeit

In the broad field of late medieval piety theology, Anne Bezzel focuses on the veneration of Christ's side wound. Based on the examination of exemplary texts by Gertrude of Helfta, Angela of Foligno, and Ludolf of Saxony, supplemented by the analysis of relevant passages from the Frankfurt conducting roll and the Frankfurt Passion play, as well as numerous visual sources, she explores the complex connotations of Christ's side wound and the various connections to other formative piety phenomena. With regard to a total of eight thematic areas—among them the phenomenon of fluid gender concepts and the normative focus on immediate grace—she investigates to what extent Christ's side wound can be understood as a connecting and deepening element in the polyphony of late medieval piety theologies.
