The question must be asked whether today a "textbook of hygiene" still has a right to exist between a brief introduction or a presentation of its fundamentals and the large handbooks in which the special fields of hygiene and epidemiology have found exhaustive treatment by their most competent representatives. Is there not a danger that a textbook, when trying to achieve a high degree of completeness of coverage within its framework, acquires the character of an encyclopedia, a reference work with the intrinsic value of such, but without being able to claim to address the reader personally? However, the experience of teaching hygiene shows that for the student, but also for the practicing physician and the medical officer, it remains a dry field of learning and work, if the teacher does not like it.
