Product details
Jacobus de Voragine (circa 1228-1298), a Dominican, Archbishop of Genoa, and author of numerous sermons and a history of the city of Genoa, is best known as the compiler of the most widely circulated collection of legends in the Middle Ages, the "Legenda aurea" (Golden Legend), which he compiled (with the assistance of an editorial team) from hundreds of written sources. This work is significant not only as a collection of materials for medieval art history but also provides essential insights into the theology, liturgy, and popular piety of his time, as well as the conflicts with the Cathars, who were fought against as heretics. The text of the original edition (2014) has been revised for this special edition; it includes: the critically edited Latin text based on the first collation of the two most important early manuscripts, an introduction providing an overview of recent research, a new German translation, and a detailed commentary with source references. The original and special editions are identically paginated, allowing them to be used side by side.
