Houston Stewart Chamberlain (1855-1927) is today regarded as a somewhat controversial author of nationalist, pan-German, and racist writings. In his time, these works, especially his main work "Foundations of the Nineteenth Century," received significant recognition even from figures such as D.H. Lawrence, Winston Churchill, and Albert Schweitzer. In 1882, he attended the Bayreuth Festival, directed by Richard Wagner, for the first time. As a great admirer of Wagner, Chamberlain published a more extensive biography about him in 1895, maintained constant contact with the Wahnfried circle led by Cosima Wagner, and married her daughter Eva in 1909. From then on, he lived among the Wagner family until his death in 1927 in Bayreuth. "Life Paths of My Thinking" is the title of Chamberlain's autobiographical sketches, which were published for the first time in 1922.
