Transmitted from family to family due to amnesia caused by the Great War, Gaston, who became wealthy despite himself thanks to his retirees, revisits moments from his earlier life with the Renaud family some thirty years later. However, more and more evidence accumulates until the final revelation, increasingly highlighting the conflict between the person he was and the person he had dreamed of being. On this backdrop, which is not without its dangers in relation to Pirandello and Giraudoux, Jean Anouilh composes a powerful piece exploring themes of memory, the past, bourgeois society, nostalgia for purity, and childhood—themes that are always close to the horizon of his work. 1937 thus proved to be a significant year in his career. The role of Gaston was also performed by notable actors: Georges Pitoëff, Pierre Fresnay, Michel Vitold, and Daniel Ivernel.
