Le sida en terre d'Afrique

For the first time, an African political leader analyses this pandemic in depth in all its dynamics and with new questions. The prospects are considerable: the future of Africa and its development depend on it. In this paper, Urbain Olanguena Awono emphasises the need for action by the international community to ensure universal access to prevention and treatment.Overcoming this challenge requires huge investments, ever more important human and financial resources and a permanent political commitment. In order to reverse the course of the epidemic, the author proposes the idea of a social vaccine that combines the responsibility of leaders and African communities. Today, we need to break the taboos and deal with certain socio-cultural factors that are susceptible to fuelling new infections, and the Cameroonian Minister of Health argues for an inculturation of the fight against a disease that is destroying the economic and social fabric of the continent, at the risk of being condemned.
