Product details
D. H. LAWRENCE (1885-1930) is known in the German-speaking world solely for his prose. In addition, however, he wrote poems throughout his short life, the complete edition of which comprises 1000 pages. Almost none of them has ever been translated into German. The original of 'Birds, Flowers and Wild Animals' appeared in 1923 under the title 'Birds, Beasts and Flowers', and Lawrence once called this volume his 'best book of poems'. 'No other writer has this simple understanding of the sacredness of the world of wild animals and reptiles, or shows this readiness to abandon his own angry ego (a curse Lawrence carried with him all his life) in an almost desperate longing for identification with pure being, unharmed by thought and feeling.' Anthony Burgess on 'Birds, Beasts and Flowers' WOLFGANG SCHLÜTER has proven himself a specialist in Anglo-Saxon literature not only through his highly acclaimed translation of Christopher Marlowe's dramas. His translations of John Aubrey ('Lebensentwürfe'), William Cowper ('Die Aufgabe') or Brendan's Isles had already appeared earlier. WEIDLE VERLAG published his translation of CURT SIODMAK's two-volume autobiography 'Among Wolf Men'. Long, thoughtful, narrow-nosed greyhound buds,/ dreamy, not quite there yet,/ pulled from the earth/ before his toes.// Dawn-rose/ not-yet-rapturous, stone-grown/ cyclamen, young cyclamen/ leaning/ awakening, ears pricked/ like tender very young greyhound puppies,/ half yawning at the open, inexperienced/ sight of day,/ flicking back their toneless petalled ears.// Greyhound puppies,/ crooking their rosy muzzles profoundly/ with gentle breaths, unwilling to awaken into the new day,/ not yet enraptured:.
